I was finishing medical residency, was 30 lbs overweight, had my first son on the way and decided to improve my health/lose weight so I could be father and husband I wanted to be. Standard diets failed and figured training for a triathlon would be the answer (just try harder). I finished residency, completed triathlon and son was born at the same time in 2010. Should have been best time of my life. Instead I had a breakdown. Stress of 8 years of medical training, physical exhaustion and inflammation from overtraining and responsibilities as a husband/ new father overwhelming. I felt like a failure as a father and husband and my efforts lead the the exact opposite outcome I was hoping for. Failed weight loss using the conventional diet advice of eat less/exercise more.
Exhaustion from over exercising. Guilt at not having energy to be the person you want to be. Guilt that your kids will have same health and weight problems as you. I vowed to do and research everything out there to find the truth and be and person/husband/father I dreamt of being. Not being in a good physical/mental shape when my son was born and feeling I let my wife and son down.I knew lack of effort was not why I failed. There must be something wrong with the conventional wisdom I was taught in medical school about nutrition.I had credibility as an MD and an insider’s view of the failure of our current medical treatment and food guidelines (treat the symptoms not the cause, explosive rise in diabetes, etc.). As a anesthesiologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center I see the devastating consequences of poor health every day . I had to personally to be a good father and husband. The trajectory I was on would have been devastating. If I’m a doctor and in this position, imagine how others must feel. Conventional Wisdom regarding diet/exercise/health. FDA food pyramid that emphasises grains and demonizes fat. Diet advice that it is simply cals in cals out, exercise more. Big Pharma that profits from explosion of obesity related disease. Big Agriculture that uses money to influence government to maintain profits at expense of nations health. Food manufactures that add sugar to everyting, use of cheap and unhealthy vegetable oils/trans fatInternal to overcome guilt of failure, external to expose the lies being told and terrible advice given. Overcoming conventional wisdom driven by powerful organizations. Exposing cals in /cals out lie, exposing low fat dogma/fda food pyramid. Exposing excess processed carbs as main cause of fat gain due to insulin driven fat storage and the multitude of health problems caused by inflammation and glycation. What the public and doctors have been told/taught is full of half-truths, outright lies, dogma and is driven by ignorance and or profit motives. I’ve extensively researched and found a better, healthy, and more sustainable solution. I’ve lost 30lbs of fat, gained 20 lb muscle, have more energy, blood pressure and blood lipids improved, mental clarity and have a vision how to help others. yes. remove processed foods, exercise efficiently, limit sugar/grains/carbs and embrace healthy fats. five years of experimentation and research. Results documented with dexa scans and blood work. yes, the information you need to thrive and reach optimal health is out there just buried in all the noise, bad advice and information overload in today’s society.
